Before we answer the question whether sinus infections are contagious or not, its imperative we look at what a sinus infection really is. Technically, a sinus infection, also known as sinusitis is not an infection by itself but an inflammation or swelling of tissues that line the sinuses.
Such swelling or inflammation happens when fluid (mucus) fills and blocks the sinuses. Viral infections, such as the common cold can block sinuses and cause them to swell up. Secondary bacterial and fungal infections can cause the swelling as well.
Can You Transmit a Sinus Infection to Others?
If the cause of your sinusitis is a viral infection such as the common cold (in most cases it is), then it’s possible that you may pass the virus to another person. The virus will most likely cause cold to the other person, but not necessarily a sinus infection. Read the rest of this entry »
